Bucket trucks, and the technicians who operate them, are the backbone of maintenance fleets that service overhead cable. Commonly, telecommunications fleets require vehicles that are highly maneuverable, operable by one person, and able to reach up to 45 feet into the air. Electric power distribution fleets have some similar requirements, but they need to know that they’re getting the most effective insulation system. Also, it is a common practice for electric utility maintenance bucket trucks to be operated by a minimum of two technicians.

Bucket trucks that can reach 45 feet in the air are able access standard utility poles, which normally measure 40 feet in height. Utility poles often support telecommunications cable and electric cable as well. When this happens, telephone cable is strung lowest, at around 15.5 feet, while electric power distribution cable is strung higher. In the United States, the higher the voltage that is carried by a cable, the further it must be from the ground.
